What is an rpz?

An RPZ, or Reduced Pressure Zone device, is a backflow prevention device used to protect the public water supply from contamination or pollution due to backflow. It is typically installed at the point where a commercial or industrial facility's water system connects to the public water system, or where there is a cross-connection between potable and non-potable water systems.

An RPZ works by creating a physical barrier that prevents water from flowing back into the public water supply. It consists of two check valves with a pressure-monitoring system between them that automatically opens a relief valve and discharges water in the event of a drop in pressure beyond a certain point. This ensures any contaminated water is discharged into a safe location, rather than flowing back into the public water system.

RPZs are often required by local plumbing codes and regulations for commercial and industrial facilities where hazardous or toxic substances are used, as well as for irrigation systems, fire sprinkler systems, and other applications where backflow could pose a risk to public health and safety.
